Blackheath, London SE3
Working alongside architects Studio Octopi, we extended and refurbished The Saddlery, a Grade II-listed late Georgian property in Blackheath. The project presented an exciting opportunity to bring contemporary architecture into a historic setting, creating a striking new living space while respecting the original building’s character and heritage.
At the heart of the transformation is a full-width, single-storey rear extension, distinguished by its bold green steel cladding, that contrasts beautifully with the property’s traditional red brickwork. The construction required careful consideration of the existing structure, including alterations to the rear elevation, the integration of different floor levels and the incorporation of distinctive architectural features. These include enlarged openings with load-bearing granite lintels, a glass staircase connecting the new space to the raised ground floor and circular ceiling openings that introduce natural light from above.
Working within the constraints of a listed building demanded precision, technical expertise and close collaboration with the architects to ensure that every detail was faithfully executed. The result is a remarkable blend of old and new, with original brickwork and period features sitting comfortably alongside contemporary materials and finishes. A dramatic, light-filled space that gives this historic family home an entirely new dimension.
