Working with architects Archmongers, we undertook the extensive refurbishment and transformation of a 1980s end-of-terrace house in Kennington, reimagining an awkward layout to create a distinctive, light-filled family home. The project included converting an existing detached garage into a bedroom and constructing a new single-storey extension to connect it to the main house, making clever use of the property’s previously underutilised courtyard.
The extension’s most striking feature is its unusual sawtooth roof, clad in corrugated aluminium, which gives the project its name, Stego. The construction brought together a series of carefully considered architectural elements, including clerestory windows, expansive glazing and a terrazzo-lined kitchen and dining area. These features introduce natural light deep into the property while maintaining privacy within its tightly enclosed urban setting.
Further improvements included a redesigned entrance, an additional extension to accommodate a study and the refurbishment of the existing interiors. Dark-stained brickwork unifies the original building with the new additions, while the reflective aluminium cladding creates an ever-changing appearance as the light shifts throughout the day.
The result is an imaginative transformation that demonstrates how thoughtful construction, precise detailing and close collaboration with architects can unlock the potential of even the most challenging spaces.
